The Department of Conservation is working with paintings and artworks on paper. The Department has 6 painting conservators employed, 2 paper conservators and 2 technicians. The Department of Conservation is responsible for all the preservation work necessary in relation to the work in the collection of the Museum. The Department carries out technical examinations and treatment. The work of Munch attracts a great deal of attention and many pieces are sent out on loan to galleries and museums abroad.
Painting stored on rollers has been an ongoing project the last years and Munch's sketches for the University's Festival Hall have high priority due to an exhibition in 2011. The same has the examination of Munch's painting "Puberty".
The Department is facing a new major challenge: preparing all the works of art to be moved to the new museum building in Bjørvika in Oslo. Emergency conservation of the Stenersen Collection is presently being carried out, and is scheduled to be completed within 2010.
